I Won't Blame You

My 12 year old son was in the kitchen, obtaining something upon which he could snack. I asked what he was doing, and he said, "Nothing like having a healthy snack." So I asked what it was that he was having. He showed me a yogurt and remarked, "Peach." I asked him to bring it over to me, cause I know that all the yogurt in our household was purchased last year some time. Maybe in a month that doesn't end in "er."

I looked at the container and the "best if used by" date (whatever that means) is August . . . of 2007. Hmmmm.

(bunny trail here - for more of my perspective on expiration dates, read this)

I told him it had expired, but let's see how it looked. We opened the container. It is hermetically sealed, after all. Or something like that. Looked fine to me. Smelled fine to me. Smelled like peach to my son. So I said, "It should be okay . . . I guess."

He walked away with the yogurt and his spoon and said, "Don't worry, Mom. If I get sick from it, I won't blame you."

So glad I'm off the hook.

I'm sorry but I gotta say...

ewwww

I'm freaky though about expiration dates. Of course with a 14 year old, things don't last that long.

Um, hope he's feeling ok today.

Yogurt doesn't last that long in this house. He should come over.

JUST for the record . . . it's now over two full days later and my son is perfectly fine. No bad stomach, no intestinal problems, nothing, nada, zip. Besides, my mom said that yogurt lasts for like ever . . . or at least longer than the silly dates they stamp on the container.

I am usually pretty particular about expiration dates. But somehow this yogurt just slipped by.

So you're off the hook, right?

I am not that particular about expiration dates. If it looks good, smells good and it's not too old I'll use it. Glad your son is fine!

This made me laugh - and feel better about how old some of the stuff in my fridge is! Sort of weird that it will last that long!
