Wordless Wednesday - Bird Banding

American Kestrel

Ditto

Western Tanager (thank you, Pi Guy!)

Virginia's Warbler

Wilson's Warbler

No worries - this bird is being released, it's not dead.

Now, when the bird banding guy gets excited, you know it must be a big deal. He said he only sees the Blackpoll Warbler about once every ten years. And he's been doing this for a very long time.

You can see more WW photos here, here, and here.

  12. I got to watch a guy band birds at Chincoteague Island last summer. It was fascinating. The entire process...but especially the way the birds got weighed: head first into an empty toilet paper roll and put on the scale. You can see posts of that in my 2007 blog archives...September, I think. Happy WW!

  17. How I WOULD LOVE to have joined you in this endeavor. So enchanted by these little feathered creatures.

I see many kestrels in our valley - but never the other little birds. What a delight.
